High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, kills approximately 40,000 people each year. It contributes to another 227,000 deaths through heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. Although easily detectable and treatable, 31 % of people with high blood pressure are unaware they even have the condition.

Optimal adult blood pressure is 120/80 or lower. High blood pressure for adults is defined as 130/85 or higher. The first number in a blood pressure reading represents the internal pressure on a blood vessel while the heart is contracting and pumping blood. The second number represents the pressure while the heart Is at rest.

It is estimated that 1 in 4 Americans have high blood pressure. It can be easily treated with dietary changes, physical activity changes, weight loss and/or medications. Because the consequences associated with high blood pressure can be so serious, early detection and aggressive treatment are recommended.
