Your main
priority when providing care is to
identify life threats to the
patient. Then, treat them in the
order they were found. When a
patient is involved in trauma, you
should also evaluate the "mechanism
of injury." The mechanism of injury
identifies what happened to the
patient and can give you clues to
the type 8. severity of injuries you
may encounter. An example is a
patient that rides their bike into a
tree. The potential for head and
neck injuries is obvious, yet
lacerations, abrasions, broken bones

The psychological
health of the patient is also an
important consideration. Most
victims will be very frightened,
maybe even irrational. Try using a
gentle tone of voice or a
comforting, professional touch. Some
EMS providers believe that
unconscious patients can hear what
is going on around them. Therefore,
avoid making disparaging or negative
statements and continue to reassure
the patient that help is on the way.
Some patients will ask you to repeat
information. They may need
reassurance or may be having some
difficulties with short term memory.
Be willing to provide the
information they are asking for. |
